ONYX Announces Production Release of SXi Lithium Ion Battery Powered High-Speed Burnisher

ONYX Systems, LLC is pleased to announce the production availability of its latest innovation, the SXi Lithium Ion Battery Powered High-Speed Burnisher. ONYX is a top supplier of high-performance floor scrubbers, burnishers, and polishers for commercial and industrial applications. Designed for use by Decorative Concrete Contractors, Building Service Contractors, Building Maintenance and Janitorial Staff, and Jan-San distributors, the SXi provides zero-emission propane engine-like productivity performance while operating at a whisper-quiet level, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications.

The SXi is the first of three machines in ONYX’s new i-Series lineup. The other two machines are the TXi, a lithium-ion battery floor stripping machine, and the ZXi, a decorative concrete polishing machine. These two further machines will go into production in December, bringing the ONYX i-Series to a close by the end of 2024.

A promising future for polished concrete flooring

The global decorative concrete market is predicted to increase from USD 18.3 billion in 2023 to USD 24.3 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 5.8%. This expansion is being driven by the growing need for long-lasting, sustainable flooring solutions in residential, commercial, and industrial projects. As builders and architects choose sustainable, cost-effective materials, decorative concrete—with its adaptability and environmental benefits—remains a popular choice.

Evolving Maintenance Equipment: Propane to Zero-Emission Solutions

The emergence of polished concrete has resulted in a commensurate evolution in maintenance equipment, particularly the transition from old engine-powered machinery to more environmentally friendly alternatives. This is also consistent with increased environmental concerns and legislation about indoor air quality.

The new ONYX i-Series machines provide a zero-emission and efficient floor maintenance solution while satisfying rising environmental criteria. The transition to zero-emission equipment is especially obvious in California, where regulatory reforms are promoting the use of environmentally friendly technologies, further altering floor maintenance methods.

Key Features and Advantages of the SXi:

  • Propane Engine-Like Productivity: The SXi offers the same power and efficiency as standard propane-powered engine machines:
    • The LFP high-energy density batteries power a 3.75kW electric motor that produces 5 horsepower. This is three times the horsepower of corded high-speed floor burnishers.
    • SXi can burnish up to 34,000 square feet of flooring every hour due to the additional power communicated to the floor; no swinging movement is required; simply operate the machine in straight lines at walking pace.
  • Configuration and Application Versatility: The SXi shares the same frame design with the ONYX X-Series of propane-powered engine machinery. This provides contractors with the operating look and feel they are accustomed to while utilizing ONYX X-Series machines. Additional configuration benefits include:
    • Configurable with a single battery for a two-plus-hour runtime or a dual battery pack for a four-plus-hour runtime.
    • Quick attach batteries allow for quick battery changes while running continuously.
    • Variable speed for maximum application performance (1,000 to 1,850 rpm). The TXi and ZXi variants offer changeable speeds ranging from 600 to 1,000 rpm.
    • To improve application-specific head pressure, three distinct adjustment methods are available.
    • The battery power management technology maintains steady pad speed and pressure throughout varying floor conditions, resulting in consistent burnishing performance.
    • The elegant, low-profile design features an LED lighting strip to highlight the burnishing path for the operator.
    • The battery compartment cover houses a 10-gallon water tank for wet processing in the TXi and ZXi variants.
  • Quiet operation: The SXi operates at a lower noise level than a normal household vacuum cleaner, reducing interruption in sensitive situations.
  • Green Technology: The ONYX i-Series will offer zero-emission alternatives to ONYX’s near-zero emission propane-powered engine machines, demonstrating the company’s dedication to promoting green technology.

This equipment is commonly used by cleaning and maintenance personnel in schools, college campuses, municipal buildings, big box retail stores, malls, industrial and commercial buildings and properties, and warehouses. The SXi can be used to burnish a wide range of hard floor surfaces, including VCT tile, Terrazzo and other decorative concrete floors, polished concrete, gymnasiums, and other hard floors that require a final shine.

The  distinguishes itself in the industry by providing a cordless high-speed burnishing option that is far quieter than a regular household vacuum cleaner. According to the ISSA Cleaning Times, the SXi provides a 240% productivity boost over a 20″ corded burnisher. The quiet operation also opens up new possibilities for cordless high-speed burnishing in places where low noise is critical, such as healthcare institutions, hospitals, nursing homes, and hospitality industries like hotels and event venues.

The ONYX SXi recently received a New Product Innovation Award in the Green Technology Category from Maintenance Sales News magazine. The SXi has also been entered for the upcoming ISSA Show Innovation Awards in the Environmental and Sustainability category. ONYX will showcase the SXi at the next ISSA event, booth 2058. “The SXi Burnisher represents a significant step forward in our product lineup,” stated Stuart Proctor, Marketing VP of ONYX Systems, LLC. “With its powerful performance and incredibly quiet operation, we’re excited to provide a solution that meets the high standards of various demanding environments while remaining true to our commitment to sustainable technology.” The i-Series exemplifies our commitment to developing battery technology and providing cutting-edge solutions that improve performance and efficiency.”
