Johnson Controls Advances Data Center Sustainability with the Industry’s First Hyperscale Data Center Solutions Platform

Johnson Controls, a global leader in smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings, has used its Silent-Aire solutions to create the industry’s first hyperscale data center platform aimed at assisting cloud providers in meeting ambitious sustainability targets.

The Johnson Controls Data Center Solutions platform provides innovative water-saving and energy-saving solutions, such as air-cooled chillers, liquid cooling, combination air handler units, future-ready refrigerants, and prefabricated modular data centers.

“Through its Data Center Solutions platform, Johnson Controls is offering something unique and valuable to global hyperscale companies,” said Lindsey Leckelt, Johnson Controls’ vice president of Data Center Solutions.

“Johnson Controls is the first to offer cutting-edge digital technologies combined with standard and customized cooling equipment and modular data center solutions that reduce energy and water consumption. We have the experience and capability to deliver these solutions to our hyperscale partners as global integrated programs at scale.”

Attaining Bold Energy and Water Goals

Mission-critical data center operations typically necessitate large amounts of water and energy for cooling, and hyperscale server rack power density is expected to double by 2023.

Many cloud providers are prioritizing investments that improve their environmental sustainability and making decarbonization-specific climate pledges.

According to Forrester Consulting’s 2021 survey, “The Race to Decarbonization: A Spotlight on Data Centers” which was commissioned by and developed in collaboration with Johnson Controls, nearly half of data center decision-makers surveyed intend to reduce energy consumption across their portfolio by at least 50% by an average reported target date of 2024.

The Silent-Aire and Johnson Controls team is uniquely positioned to assist data center leaders in meeting these objectives by designing and deploying cooling solutions that reduce environmental impact while increasing efficiency and productivity.

Redefining the Sustainability of Hyperscale Data Centers

Johnson Controls’ Silent-Aire solutions have focused on innovative, cost-effective ways to assist hyperscale customers in responding to these challenges.

Johnson Controls is a leading provider to hyperscale companies through Silent-Aire.

Johnson Controls, with its hyperscale leadership, global sustainability services, world-class engineering, and advanced research and development, is poised to support one of the technology industry’s fastest growing segments as it confronts and resolves environmental challenges.

“We’re thinking beyond singular projects; we’re investing in ongoing partnerships,” said Maik Bohlmann, vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls’ Data Center Solutions.

“We are carefully listening to our customers, and we are best positioned to assist them as they redefine their data centers and energy profiles. From cutting-edge technologies to ongoing support throughout the lifecycle of their development, it’s as much a revolution in our approach as it is an evolution in data center design.”

Johnson Controls’ commitment to sustainability is reflected in the Data Center Solutions platform.

Since 2002, Johnson Controls has reduced its energy and greenhouse gas intensity by 70%. Johnson Controls is honored to be AAA MSCI rated, one of Corporate Knights’ “Top 100 Most Sustainable Companies” and first in its industry segment.

The OpenBlue suite of connected solutions from the company enables customers to drive environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals by enabling significant energy savings and a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions.
