Schlage Releases L Series Motorized Latch Retraction Locks

With the introduction of motorized latch retraction to our trusted L Series, we’re providing a solution that not only enhances security and improves accessibility, it also delivers quiet, seamless operation for demanding environments like halthcare and education.

Allegion US, a leading provider of security solutions, technology, and services, has unveiled the latest addition to the Schlage L Series: Motorized Latch Retraction mortise locks, which won multiple categories at the Campus Security Today Secure Campus Awards. Latch retraction capabilities L Series Grade 1 locks, which were first introduced to the market in March 2025, open up new application potential in a variety of areas, including security, controlled access, and hands-free operation. They can provide a more secure and aesthetically beautiful alternative to the usage of electric strikes. They operate quietly, making them excellent for healthcare situations or elsewhere where repetitive user exit and entry causes disruption.

“With the introduction of motorized latch retraction to our trusted L Series, we’re providing a solution that not only enhances security and improves accessibility, it also delivers quiet, seamless operation for demanding environments like healthcare and education,” stated Jim Bembenek, senior project manager at Allegion US. “This innovation reflects our commitment to creating smarter, more efficient access solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

Quiet Control and Patent Pending Features

These L Series locks stand out for their quiet management. Unlike competitors, Motorized Latch Retraction locks are available in six functions, including keyed, non-keyed, and lever control choices. All use an ultra-quiet stepper motor powered by 24V DC to generate high torque at low speeds. Three functions enable latch retraction for brief or continuous operation. Three more capabilities include lever control, which allows the lever to be locked and unlocked using a separate motor. Almost all have options for both request-to-exit (RX) and latchbolt (LX) monitoring. A patent-pending function detects binding circumstances on the motor and adjusts accordingly to overcome side load, static pressure, and warped door conditions.

    Variety of Applications

Motorized latch retraction functions are part of the L Series mortise family and are suitable for a wide range of applications. It may be retrofitted into the same pocket as a conventional L Series mortise and electrified through the door, keeping the frame intact. Wiring is then connected on the same side as an auto operator for scenarios that require hands-free control, such as accessible restrooms. Other hands-free applications include infection control and clean room applications, locations that require cart access, delivery doors, and high-security data centers where robotic access may be necessary. Other applications include openings with limited or timed access, as well as K-12 institutions that require controlled access for guest entrances, administration offices, or classroom doors. Furthermore, as a member of the L Series family, it provides the same strength, dependability, and endurance as Schlage’s most popular electrified mortise series.
