Swatchbox Launches Second Life Samples to Help AEC Firms Reduce Material Sample Waste by Up to 90%

The Second Life Samples program allows architects and designers to return and reuse material samples, diverting useable materials from landfills and putting them back into circulation for use by other building professionals.

Swatchbox, the premier material sample platform for architects and designers, has launched a first-of-its-kind circular sampling initiative, which has resulted in a 90% reduction in material sample waste among participating architecture and design businesses.

The Second Life Samples program allows architects and designers to return and reuse material samples, diverting useable materials from landfills and putting them back into circulation for use by other building professionals.

Since its inception in 2018, Swatchbox has offered free return services for samples ordered through its marketplace. The introduction of Second Life Samples broadens this service to encompass any material samples in complete, undamaged condition, whether obtained via Swatchbox or elsewhere. This enables businesses to sustainably reuse any material held in their sample libraries that is no longer required for reference.

Return samples are assessed and graded using a patented procedure that incorporates an AI visual engine that assesses material condition and assigns identifying information such brand name, product line, and SKU. Once processed, the samples are stored in Swatchbox fulfillment centers and made available on the Swatchbox platform for use by other architects and designers, restoring their value while diverting them from landfills.

Unlabeled, discontinued, or lightly worn samples are made accessible to students and teachers. Any material that is not recoverable due to damage is subsequently handled by Swatchbox recycling partners.

Swatchbox has completed a private beta of the program with major architecture and design partners in the United States and United Kingdom.

“At Swatchbox, we’re architects first, and we’re reshaping how the industry thinks about material sampling,” said Benjamin Glunz, CEO of Swatchbox parent company Anguleris. “Second Life addresses a common problem: waste. Today, we are closing the loop on the sampling issue. Architects can now design smarter, move faster, and create a better society without compromising sustainability for innovation.”

Participation in the Swatchbox Second Life Samples program will help AEC firms work toward sustainability certifications including LEED (USGBC), AIA 2030 Commitment, Living Building Challenge, and WELL Building Standard.

The Second Life Samples program is offered to Swatchbox company partners across the United States and the United Kingdom. To learn more about the program and to apply, go to https://secondlife.swatchbox.com.
