Sika Corporation Introduces Tuff-N-Nuff Rockshield with New Rapid-Edge Self-Fastening Technology

Tuff-N-Nuff with Rapid-Edge technology is a self-fastening rockshield product with hook-and-loop closure for faster and less expensive installation.

During backfill operations, the product protects pipeline coatings from direct impact.

Tuff-N-Nuff rockshield is made up of small diameter strands of flexible PVC that are woven together to form a porous, non-woven mat that does not trap water against the pipeline.

During the manufacturing process, the strands are bonded together in a controlled, random pattern.

The product is installed in two steps with the new Rapid-Edge installation feature: the roll is placed over the pipe, then the edges are simply pressed together to continuously secure the pipe.

Tuff-N-Nuff with Rapid-Edge is manufactured in the United States using the same long-lasting formula as its namesake predecessor, which has been on the market for over 30 years.

“Rapid-Edge is tackling some of the Oil and Gas Pipeline industry’s biggest issues by reducing cost, application time, and need for manpower, while improving jobsite safety,” stated Kyle Loyd, Sika Corporation’s Executive Vice President of Engineered Concrete and Waterproofing Systems.

“We are very excited to be announcing this much-needed advancement in rockshield technology.”

Tuff-N-Nuff with Rapid-Edge provides an economical solution for rapid installation of rockshield, as well as the following benefits:

  • Reduce installation costs by over 50%.
  • Removes the need for tape, which is required by all other rockshields.
  • Reduces the number of people needed in the trench during installation, resulting in a safer worksite.
  • Installation simplicity, including arctic temperatures.
  • In our ASTM G13 Modified Impact Testing, our impact resistance was industry-leading, with superior performance and protection capable of withstanding the impact of rocks up to 6″ in diameter.
  • The most frequently specified rockshield brand in the United States and Canada.

Sika’s St. Louis, MO facility manufactures the product. Tuff-N-Nuff with Rapid-Edge will be available in all standard roll sizes to accommodate any pipeline diameter up to 22″ in diameter.
