Daikin Applied Introduces Air Source Heat Pumps to Premier Rooftop Systems

The new Rebel Applied and Rebel units, with electricity-powered heat pumps, low-GWP R-32 refrigerant, and ultra-efficient inverter compressors, will assist building owners in optimizing comfort and cost while decarbonizing their facilities.

Daikin Applied announced that its award-winning Rebel and Rebel Applied packaged rooftop systems will now include air-source heat pumps. The new Rebel Applied and Rebel units, with electricity-powered heat pumps, low-GWP R-32 refrigerant, and ultra-efficient inverter compressors, will assist building owners in optimizing comfort and cost while decarbonizing their facilities. The units also have features that improve performance, particularly in cold areas, and make installation easier for both new construction and retrofits.

“We’re not just making heat pumps available; we’re also making them useful for a variety of applications,” said Jim Macosko, Daikin Applied’s vice president of product and sustainability solutions. “Buildings consume 40% of global energy and emit 33% of greenhouse gas emissions, making them critical to climate change mitigation. By solving heat pumps’ historical restrictions, we’re enabling clients to employ this technology, electrify their HVAC systems, and decarbonize in a way that helps both the environment and the financial line.”

Low Ambient Operation

Heat pumps face a capacity difficulty since the colder the temperature, the less efficient and effective the heat pump becomes. Rebel Applied and Rebel rooftop units, on the other hand, perform well in lower ambient temperatures thanks to inverter compressors and R-32’s specific operating environment. Rebel Applied does this through a greater exterior coil surface and an auxiliary compressor that activates when temperatures drop. In Rebel, compressors feature a boost option that increases speeds in cold weather to maximize heating capacity.

Similarly, when employed in a dedicated outdoor air system, conventional heat pumps’ performance suffers dramatically when ambient air temperatures dip below 45°F. To solve this constraint, the new Rebel Applied units include optional features such as energy recovery wheels, which pre-heat air before it goes through the heating coil, thereby increasing the heat pump’s capacity once again.

Simplified Configuration

Switching from natural gas to electricity as an energy source is more than simply the equipment; it frequently necessitates adjustments to a building’s electrical infrastructure, which can raise installation costs, particularly in retrofit applications. However, Daikin is making the shift easier and more cost-effective.

Rebel Applied and Rebel heat pumps use adjustable circuitry to isolate new loads to smaller and independent circuits, eliminating or minimizing electrical infrastructure upgrades, reducing installation time and associated costs. Furthermore, the rooftop systems include auxiliary electric heat restrictions and emergency backup controls, which lower the unit’s peak electrical consumption.

Real-world Efficiency

The rooftop units, which use R-32 refrigerant, are up to 20% more efficient than previous models that used R-410A. These innovative solutions are appropriate for schools and commercial office buildings with similar requirements for comfort and space conditioning. The new heat pump technology is just one component of Daikin’s bigger push for solutions that reimagine sustainable heating and cooling.
