FLOR Introduces the World’s First Carbon Negative Area Rugs

FLOR, a high-end area rug brand for homes, offices, and every space in between has launched the first-ever carbon-negative area rugs as part of its Spring Collection.

These area rugs, inspired by nature, combine an on-trend design with a low environmental impact, resulting in a finished product that combines durability, beautiful design, and a negative carbon footprint.

Three carbon-negative area rug styles – Peninsula, Stratosphere, and Hemisphere – take design cues from nature and its forms, as evidenced by their ability to store more carbon than they release from raw material extraction to manufacturing, or cradle-to-gate.

This innovation does not include the purchase of carbon offsets, which FLOR also does for the remaining life cycle of the product. This is the latest step in FLOR’s journey to conduct business in ways that return to the Earth whatever is taken from it.

“The carbon-negative area rug innovation is a continuation of our commitment to lower our carbon footprint through responsibly-sourced materials, manufacturing powered by renewable energy, and innovative backing technology,” said FLOR General Manager James Pope.

“This launch marks an exciting milestone for FLOR as we strive to make it easier for consumers to create beautiful, healthy homes. Importantly, environmental responsibility is one of the criteria that more and more customers are considering in their purchasing decisions, so this launch addresses an important market need for today’s home.”

Creating Area Rugs with Carbon

FLOR uses plant-based materials that have sequestered carbon to develop its CQuest BioX backing, which has a negative carbon footprint, inspired by nature’s carbon-storing ability.

The CQuest backings line, developed by the parent company Interface, incorporates more recycled content and new bio-based materials than ever before.

FLOR’s new CQuest backing, ECONYL yarn, and new manufacturing process all contribute to a carbon-negative area rug.

This means that the carbon emitted by these innovative rug styles has been offset by the carbon emitted by the extraction of raw materials during manufacturing.

This prevents carbon from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.

“FLOR’s journey to sustainability is truly woven into everything it does,” said Lisa Conway, Vice President of Sustainability at Interface.

“This carbon negative innovation is the brand’s latest milestone in lowering its carbon footprint while helping its customers live their sustainability values.”

“It’s exciting to see this carbon innovation, which first appeared on the commercial side of our company, makes its way into residential spaces. These new area rugs make it easier for today’s consumer to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining their sense of style.”

This collection includes FLOR’s first-ever carbon-negative area rugs, but they will not be the last. The company intends to release additional styles that will benefit the environment even more.

Carbon-negative rugs will be labeled with a special symbol to help consumers choose products with the lowest carbon footprint.

Nature-Inspired Designs

FLOR’s muse is nature, as evidenced by the high-style designs of Peninsula, Stratosphere, and Hemisphere.

Peninsula is inspired by the bands of land and water that surround its namesake landform, as evidenced by its gently rolling color stripes.

Interior spaces in Hemisphere are grounded by a design that mimics the Earth’s layers.

Stratosphere is a breath of fresh air, a light and breezy style inspired by the atmosphere.

All three products are available in three different colorways.

Peninsula comes in black, mahogany, and grey, while Hemisphere and Stratosphere come in black, pigeon, and tan.

FLOR’s carbon negative styles must be installed with the brand’s new green FLORdot+.

In the Americas, all three styles are currently available.
