Applied Photonix Launches ViroZap FDA-Cleared In-Duct Air Disinfection Device

ViroZap installs in new or existing HVAC ductwork and uses ozone-free UV-A technology to disinfect air continuously.

Applied Photonix has launched ViroZap, an in-duct air disinfection device that the Tampa-based company describes as the first FDA-cleared Class II medical device in its category. ViroZap installs in new or existing HVAC ductwork and treats air continuously for homes, schools, offices, and healthcare facilities.

The device uses UV-A plasmonic photonic technology rather than UV-C. The company says it produces no ozone and is pressure-drop neutral, meaning it adds disinfection without restricting airflow.

At 500 CFM, Applied Photonix reports inactivation of 99.9995% of viruses, 99.9997% of bacteria, and 99.995% of mold and fungal spores. The system is designed to align with ASHRAE 241 and ASHRAE 170 guidance and to work with coated MERV 13 or MERV 15 filters plus a MERV 8 pre-filter. It scales from residential systems to hospitals. ViroZap was developed by Dr. Yogi Goswami, and the company is seeking distribution and installation partners in the United States and internationally.

Terry Murray, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Applied Photonix, said ViroZap moves indoor air quality beyond filtration to continuous disinfection at the source. “With FDA clearance as a Class II medical device, we’re able to bring hospital-grade air safety to the spaces people spend the most time in: their homes, schools, offices, and of course, healthcare facilities,” Murray said.

Key features:

  • FDA-cleared Class II medical device for in-duct air disinfection (per the company)
  • UV-A technology with no ozone
  • Reported 99.9995% virus, 99.9997% bacteria, and 99.995% mold and fungal spore inactivation at 500 CFM
  • Pressure-drop neutral; aligned with ASHRAE 241 and ASHRAE 170
  • Works with coated MERV 13 or MERV 15 filters and a MERV 8 pre-filter
  • Scales from residential to healthcare systems
